How can a painter capture in watercolour his emotional response to a landscape and give the painting the uniqueness of his own personal view? THE CHALLENGE OF WATERCOLOUR is principally concerned with landscape painting and helps the watercolour painter to find individual techniques with which to express his feelings about a landscape.

John Blockley discusses the painters need to recognise personal responses to a subject and to discover new and exciting ways of achieving them in watercolour. John Blockley is especially interested in the surface qualities and textures of a landscape.

He employs traditional watercolour methods as a basis for his paintings and then introduces exciting and innovative techniques to bring out special, and often dramatic, effects. He describes the use of materials such as wax resist, masking fluid and ink to highlight the nature of eroded stone, lichen-covered rock and other landscape features. In his book, John Blockley demonstrates the progression from the painters initial emotional response to the practical application of these special techniques, by using vivid step-by-step examples.

John Blockley is one of the best known watercolour painters working in Britain today. He is a Member of the Royal Institute of Painters in Watercolour and a Member of the Pastel Society. He is tutor for the extremely successful Pitman Correspondence Course in Watercolour, he lectures and gives demonstrations. for Art Societies and has been a regular contributor to The Art/! magazine.

He also runs painting holidays privately (with pupils from many countries) and these holidays are usually fully booked a year in advance. John Blockley has exhibited widely and his work is to be found in many private collections. His studio, a converted 16th century stone barn, is situated in the beautiful Cotswold countryside. 160 pages: 16 colour plates, 112 b/w photographs, 30 line draw!ings
